Can I Find a Good Columbus Criminal Defense Attorney on Avvo?

The Internet has made it remarkably easy to start a search for a good criminal defense attorney. Many people start by putting in search terms applicable to their situation. For example, if you were arrested for a DUI, then you might put in "drunk driving," "DUI," "experienced criminal defense attorney," and "Columbus, Ohio." Then you would probably take a look at what comes up. If you make a short list of attorneys you might be interested in speaking with, you would probably Google them. Attorneys will probably have firm websites, professional firm profiles, a LinkedIn profile, bar licensure pages, and possibly pages describing accolades or opinions.

What Is Avvo?

But one other page pretty much all attorneys will have are Avvo pages. This is a company that makes pages for attorneys. The company owns the pages, but attorneys can "claim" them and add information about themselves. If an attorney has not filled in their page, it will be pretty bare bones, but can still contain some helpful information. If an attorney has filled in their page, it might have more description about their practice areas.

Avvo Ratings

Avvo puts out attorney Avvo ratings. They base them on a number of sources such as public data, bar license organization data, and other sources such as attorney's websites. They weight information in calculating the rating. Avvo can be one component in your search for an attorney. However, do keep in mind that there are limits to its usefulness since attorneys cannot control all the content on the page, some of it might be outdated.

You should always do more searching through other avenues to make sure you are getting a full picture of the attorney. You can check to see if they are a member in good standing of the Ohio State Bar and check them out at the Columbus bar association. Many attorneys are active in other professional organizations as well to keep abreast of changes in the law, keep up their skills, or to simply give back to the community. Looking at their affiliations and organizations is a great way to see what they care about and what areas they are experienced in.

Avvo Attorney Reviews

Whether an attorney decides to claim their profile or not, people can leave client reviews on the site. It can be a good way to see what clients thought about an attorney and how their case was handled. If you want to see other reviews of clients, another great place to look is on the attorney's website where you might find client testimonials. You could also ask the attorney for references so you can talk directly to clients who would be willing to speak about their experience. You should also look at Google reviews by searching the law firm's name to see reviews on the right side of your screen.
