The National Do Not Call Registry

Over 50 million U.S. consumers are already on the FTC "do not call list." Telemarketing firms that call such numbers may be fined up to $11,000 per call. Once the various appeals are decided, you may wish to hire an attorney, or sue in small claims court for up to $3,000 (in Ohio) if a firm has violated your request.

People may register their telephone numbers on the National Do Not Call Registry at www.donotcall.gov or by calling toll-free (888) 382-1222.

You can and should tell companies to put your number on the "do not call list." They are required to comply, particularly if they are a member of the Direct Marketing Association.
